If you own your property, then combined buildings and contents insurance cover makes perfect sense. first direct home insurance provides the same levels of cover as single cover, but can be more cost effective. If you want specific cover, such as home emergency or accidental damage, our optional extras allow you to tailor your cover to your exact needs, so you’re not paying for unnecessary cover.
- Cover against fire, smoke, lightening, storms and floods; escape of water and frozen pipes up to £50,000 (or a specified sum)
- Cover for watches, jewellery and precious metals; we’ll even cover your coin, stamp and medal collections, too, with our Valuable contents cover up to £10,000
- Contents temporarily removed from home up to £5,000
- Contents in your garden up to £1,000
- Religious festivals and wedding gift cover up to £3,000
- Tenants liability up to £15,000
- Loss or damage to the structure of your home (including garages and outbuildings) up to the buildings chosen sum
- Cost of alternative accommodation (and loss of rent due to you) if your home can’t be lived in following insured damage up to £80,000 or 20% of the building chosen sum
- Sourcing a domestic water leak which is damaging the home (including making good after the leak’s been fixed) up to £5,000
- Replacement of external door locks if keys are lost or stolen up to £1,000
- Damage from wear and tear, electrical and mechanical breakdown, or gradual deterioration
- Storm damage to fences, gates and hedges
- Certain loss or damage (e.g. from burst pipes) to buildings or contents when your home is unoccupied for more than the number of days selected
- Certain loss or damage (e.g. theft, or malicious damage) caused by you, paying guests or tenants

Restrictions
- Not all types of heating systems and boilers are included in home emergency cover
- Home emergency cover isn't a service and maintenance product and doesn't cover damage due to wear and tear (e.g. dripping taps)
- Doesn't cover breakdown of electric showers or domestic appliances like washing machines, and doesn't cover problems you were already aware of when you bought cover.
Legal expenses cover provides you with a lawyer if you need one, and up to £50,000 of legal costs to pursue or defend a wide range of disputes including:
- personal injury
- employment
- property
- medical negligence
- consumer issues.
Restrictions
We will only accept your legal expenses claim if our lawyer believes you are likely to win the case. Conditions also apply if you want to nominate your own lawyer to represent you.

- hammering a nail through a pipe
- damaging wood or tiled flooring.
Restrictions
- the excess(es) shown on your schedule
- damage caused by wear and tear, settlement and shrinkage, vermin, insects, fungus, weather conditions, or any damage which happens gradually
- damage caused by chewing, scratching, tearing or fouling by domestic animals
- damage caused by faulty materials or design, or poor workmanship.
- knocking over a favourite ornament and damaging it
- sitting on your glasses at home
- spilling a drink on your carpet
- damage to portable computers when in the home.
Restrictions
- the excess(es) shown on your schedule
- food in freezers, clothing, contact lenses, stamps and pedal cycles
- damage caused by wear and tear, light, weather conditions, moths, vermin, insects, fungus, damp, rust, wet or dry rot, or anything which happens gradually
- damage caused by chewing, scratching, tearing or fouling by domestic animals.
- Protect your personal belongings, wherever you are in the world
- You can select cover between £2,000 and £10,000 with a single item limit of £1,500.
Restrictions
- Limitations apply to personal belongings stolen from an unattended vehicle
- We don’t cover snowboards, skis (including sticks and bindings), water skis, sub-aqua equipment, riding tack, contact lenses and hearing aids under the Personal Belongings option unless we have specifically agreed to do so.
- Covers you between £300 and £2,500 towards loss or damage
Restrictions
- loss or damage to tyres or accessories unless the pedal cycle is stolen or damaged at the same time
- theft while away from the home, unless in a building or securely locked to an immovable object.
- Up to £5,000 of cover is available for loss, damage or theft of clerical business equipment, including £500 of cover for stock and samples used in connection with your employment when stored at your home
- Up to £300 for business money and credit cards used for the purpose of your business.
Restrictions
- Clerical business stock or trade samples doesn't include wines, spirits or tobacco, furs, antiques or works of art, jewellery, precious metals or stones, or any articles made from them, chemicals or any hazardous materials.
